What? To celebrate the centenary of the most famous art school in the world, the Bauhaus Archiv Berlin is staging a year of events across Germany.
Where? Across Germany. The opening festival is at The Academy of Arts in Berlin.
Why? The world we live in is incredibly complicated and increasingly weird. As we look towards a future made unpredictable by technology, we are confronted by series of fundamental questions. How can we remain human in an age of remote communication? How can beauty exist in a world of explosive mass production? How can we find peace while, all around us, everything accelerates?
These very 21st century questions, however, are not new at all.
A hundred years ago, as the ‘Modern Age’ was beginning to hot up, the Bauhaus School opened in Weimar, Germany. Through manifesto writing, art, sculpture and industrial design, the students of the Bauhaus confronted the very issues we fret about today. What resulted was a radical marriage of emotional abstraction and streamlined functionalism – a style combination which looks cutting edge to this day.
To celebrate the centenary of this seminal school, the Bauhaus Archiv Berlin is staging a year of events across Germany.
On the 16th of January 2019, Artistic Director Bettina Wagner-Bergelt is kicking the Bauhaus100 season off with an unmissable opening festival – featuring an immersive virtual reality performance of ‘Das Totale Tanz Theater’.
The acts and art works on show promise to be weird, wonderful, and evocative of unusual futures. A perfect tribute to the Bauhaus ethos.
When? The Opening Festival will be held on the 16th of January 2019. However, the Bauhaus Archiv Berlin will be staging a year of events across Germany, reaffirming the country’s status as the best travel destination for design lovers.
