Amsterdam

Splash Health Club
Known locally to attract expats, this upscale gym is located in the city center near Leidseplein. As well as plenty of strength and cardio equipment (over 40 machines), there is also an onsite masseuse, sauna, steam room, juice bar health shop. They are open until midnight during the week and offer group classes in English, so there’s no excuse to not join in.

The Warehouse
A multi-functional training facility with locations in Al Quoz, The Beach and most recently Business Bay. Expect blaring house music in urban industrial warehouse settings where the walls are covered in graffiti murals and the lighting makes you feel like you are somewhere between an old-school boxing gym and a nightclub. All 3 venues have training facilities for Crossfit, Bodybuilding and Weightlifting and The Beach venue has an outdoor fitness zone named after Muscle Beach in California.

It’s not the most glamorous gym in town but with 10 locations (some open for 24 hours), it is one of the most convenient. Created in partnership with Madonna, this is a gym for those looking for an intense workout experience. The 20,000 square foot space is all concrete and leather with dramatic lighting and a DJ booth. It might feel like a party but you’ll find serious cardio and strength-training machines here as well group fitness classes, sauna, steam room, lap pools and a jacuzzi.

New York

New York Health and Racquet Club
One of New York’s original gyms, this upmarket fitness facility now has 10 locations around the city and is open till 11 pm during the week. You’ll find free weights, cardio and strength-training equipment as well as indoor pools and a wide variety of classes from kickboxing to karate.

Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium
A former World War II training ground and venue for the 1964 Summer Olympics, this city-run sports complex is steeped in history. The well organised training rooms include nearly 100 different cardio machines, free weights, several bench press machines and squat racks. Gym etiquette in Japan dictates your shoes are always clean so don’t forget to bring a pair of indoor trainers.
